RSPB Northern Ireland.
Following an initial request for a solution from the RSPB Northern Ireland, Aquatic Control Engineering Ltd working with Pipex Ltd have developed a bespoke and very unique HDPE headwall to overcome the problem of installing pre-cast concrete structures on very soft ground. Following discussions between the RSPB and ACE it became apparent that the site in question may not be suitable for the installation of pre-cast concrete structures without the risk of the structures sinking.
The HDPE solution was conceived and developed by ACE Ltd. and manufactured by Pipex Ltd. ACE then supplied a penstock and related control equipment for the regulation of water on a nature reserve outside Belfast.
The equipment was successfully installed with the addition of a WaStop non-return valve to ensure the water can only flow in one direction.
Bespoke elver, fish & eel pass development continues.
To assist with the migration of elvers, ACE offer a wide range of elver passage equipment to allow them to overcome the virtual barrier which is introduced when a water control structure is installed across a watercourse. ACE are continuously developing new concepts for allowing elver migration, whether to be used with or without our equipment, and offer a range of bespoke types using varying methods.
Previous types range from simple channels fitted with brush substrate, to more elaborate float systems to maintain an opening on tidal structures, whilst ensuring protection from flooding at high tide. ACE also have a number of concepts in development, including a self-regulating type which doesn't require power. All possibilities are considered, therefore please contact us if you require a method for attracting and assisting elvers to migrate.
