Fish Deterrent Strobe Lights

Underwater strobe lights can be used to effectively deflect fish from pumping stations, navigation locks, cooling water intakes and hydropower turbines. The lights can guide fish to alternative passage routes and thus lower fish mortality.

Key features

  • Brightest super LED lights on market specially designed for our fish deterrent system
  • Long life span for lights 15 year design life with 3 year manufacturer warranty
  • Low energy consumption 24v system
  • Automated cleaning systems available
  • Acoustic fish deterrent systems and bubble screens available to work in conjunction with strobe light system
  • Low maintenance
  • Conforms to the environment agency good practice guidelines
  • Outstanding monitoring results, including eel specific monitoring reports

Monitoring results

  • Ijmuiden pumping station (one of the largest in the Netherlands) showed 10 times fewer eel approached the pumping station when the strobe lights were in operation
  • Meerweg te Haren pumping station Strobe lights in conjunction with Venturi bypass allowed 8,272 fish out of 8,332 fish safe passage around the pumping station 0.6% mortality rate in 75 days (report currently undergoing translation Dutch copy available upon request).
  • RWE 50m³/sec hydro power plant with strobe system report coming soon
  • Welches Dam pumping station with strobe system monitoring report coming soon

Further information

With high light output yet low energy consumption, the fish deflection system consists of one or multiple super LED light units.

LED technology was utilised as the life span of the lights are much higher, the energy usage much lower and the light more intense than traditional stroboscopic light systems.

The super LED light units ACE provide are unique on the market and were specifically designed and created for the purpose of fish guidance as no other LED lights available on the market were bright enough to effectively deter fish.

These super LED units are placed at a regular distances within tubes which can be manufactured in an array of materials. The light units are covered by polycarbonate coated glass for additional strength. The individual light units produce short pulses of extremely bright light. The number of lights that are required and the optimal positioning are dependent on the local situation.

With the use of lights as a fish deterrent it is very important to keep the lenses clean, ACE offer an array of solutions, including the use of atomised cleaning brushes.

ACE also has the capability to offer acoustic fish deterrent systems in addition to the super active LED lights.

ACE is able to provide diagnostic systems to monitor each individual element of the fish deterrent system so you can tell if a speaker or a light unit requires any maintenance.

As each site is unique ACE offer a design liaison service, to carry out a site survey and advice on product selection.
