Refurbishment & Retrofit

Much of the UK’s flood defence pumping infrastructure is decades old. We upgrade existing stations rather than rebuild them — replacing pumps, drives, screens, penstocks and controls within the existing chamber wherever possible. Minimal civil works means lower cost, shorter programmes and less time with the station off line during the flood season.

About Flood Defence Pumps

Flood defence pumping is a low-head, high-volume duty: moving very large quantities of water against a lift of only a few metres, reliably, often at short notice and frequently through screened but debris-laden water. That combination rules some pump types in and others out. Centrifugal and axial units give high capacity in a compact chamber; Archimedean screw pumps handle silt, weed and suspended solids at excellent efficiency in a simple structure. We use 3D modelling and CFD analysis to prove the selection before anything is ordered.

Pentair Fairbanks Nijhuis rotodynamic pumps with a smooth, rounded impeller leading edge and wide clearances. Independently tested at 100% eel and over 97% fish survival. Vertical or horizontal, wet-well or dry-well, with flows to 180,000 m³/h. The high-capacity choice where footprint is tight and heads reach up to around 8 m.

Archimedean Screw Pumps

Fishflow Innovations enclosed-tube screw pumps for gentle, low-head, high-flow transfer. The tubular drum removes leakage and slip, the profiled leading edge removes strike points, and a reverse facility lets aquatic life escape. Silt, weed and vegetation pass without blockage — ideal for drainage boards, wetlands and habitat schemes.
