Penstocks

Penstocks

A penstock or sluice gate is a type of valve for controlling water or sewerage. Penstocks are, in essence, a sliding door that can be operated by hand or by means of an actuator. After that, the penstock door raises to open and allow the passage of water and lowers to isolate the flow

Low Maintenance

With no metal on metal moving parts there is virtually no chance of our penstocks seizing, meaning the penstocks require practically no maintenance.

Automated Operation

Our penstock range is compatible with all actuator systems. Meaning our penstocks can be setup to be operated autonomously depending on the criteria.

Superior Sealing

Unlike stoplogs, penstocks can seal a pipe on all four sides, ensuring a robust isolation of flow.

About Penstocks

A penstock is controlled by a mechanically operated spindle. The spindle can be operated automatically through the use of an actuator. This could be activated once specific set levels are reached. Therefore, removing the need for any human interaction. Penstocks also seal a pipe on all 4 sides. However, this is something that stoplogs are unable to do.

Why Choose Penstocks

01

Efficient Flow Control

TThe raising and lowering mechanism of penstocks allows for precise control of water passage, enhancing operational efficiency.

02

Automation Benefits

The automatic operation of penstocks reduces the need for constant manual monitoring, saving time and labor costs.

03

Effective Isolation

The ability of penstocks to seal a pipe on all sides ensures effective isolation of flow, making them ideal for water or sewerage control.

04

Adaptability

With their hand-operated or actuator-controlled design, penstocks offer adaptability to different operational needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

A penstock is a used to control or stop the flow of water. Penstocks can be controlled automatically with the use of an actuator or manually. When used in flood protection penstocks often act as the second line of defence.

ACE penstocks are manufactured using Stainless Steel 316 and HDPE. The nut blocks on the ACE penstocks are made of either bronze or Polyoxymethylene (POM) depending on usage. Should your penstock need to be operated more that once a week we recommend a bronze nut block.

Yes. Our penstocks are fully compliant to BS7775:2015, and we can provide in-house test reports of various sizes to confirm this.

ACE supply multiple types of penstocks. Our range is manufactured through our brand of water flow control, AQUIKO. The penstocks we offer are:

  • Wall mounted penstock
  • Lightweight penstock
  • Flush Invert Penstock
  • Channel penstock
  • Weir penstock
  • Double leaf penstock
  • Inline penstock

Both types should comply to BS7775, however the leakage rates allowable for Cast iron penstocks is higher than is allowed for “fabricated penstocks with a resilient seal”. Our penstocks also have seals which self-adjust and do not require adjustment. Cast Iron penstocks have machined surfaces which have to be adjusted very accurately to ensure a smooth and tight fit. This is prone to damage and soon wears, requiring further adjustment, or more commonly, more leakage occurs as they are not adjusted.

    More About Penstocks

The term ‘penstock’ originates from the days of water mills in the 17th century. It was very common for a pond to be used to feed the water wheel and this was referred to as a ‘pen’. Timber stop logs were used to control the flow of the water onto the wheel these were called the ‘stock’.

Later, as there was a need to much more accurately control the velocity of the water. The stop logs were replaced by a single sliding gate operated by a lifting mechanism. This became known as penstock.

We were the first in the UK to provide stainless steel and HDPE penstocks. Alternatives to the outdated cast iron versions used in the past. It has been our philosophy to use modern materials and up-to-date technologies. As a result, reducing maintenance, carbon footprint and increase asset life. This has enabled us to forge our strong position which we hold in the UK market today.

It is this strong position that enabled us to use the years’ of experience to design and manufacture their own brand of penstocks called AQUIKO. All AQUIKO penstocks are designed and manufactured in the UK.
