Stamford Bridge Tilting Weir
The Brief
Over recent years, the Environment Agency identified the need for replacement of the existing weir penstock at Stamford Bridge. AMCO Construction enlisted the expertise of Aquatic Control Engineering Ltd (ACE) to devise and implement an effective solution.
Challenges included the weir’s location in a residential area demanded aesthetic improvements. An enhancement of operational efficiency was a key objective. Future maintenance considerations required careful planning.
The Solution
Innovative Tilting Weir Technology:
To address the aesthetic concerns and operational efficiency, ACE proposed the installation of a Tilting Weir. Unlike traditional weirs, the Tilting Weir is driven from one side, eliminating the need for an access gantry across the river. This not only improved the visual appeal in the residential setting but also significantly reduced the build-height compared to the original sluice.
Bespoke Stoplog Frames for Maintenance:
Considering future maintenance requirements, ACE designed and provided a set of bespoke stoplog frames. These frames were specially crafted to interface with a curved and sloping wall, minimizing the need for extensive concrete works within the watercourse. This bespoke solution aimed to streamline and simplify any future maintenance activities.
