Major pumping station upgrade in Goole

major upgrade works to goole pumping stations

The Brief

Laxton and Blacktoft are two villages on the banks of the River Ouse, close to where it meets the Humber Estuary near Goole. When the floods of 2007 struck, both communities were badly affected — homes, arable land, and local infrastructure all suffering significant damage. For the Ouse and Humber Drainage Board, it was a watershed moment that demanded a long-term solution.

The Solution

ACE was appointed to supply the full mechanical package for both stations. Rather than treating flood defence and environmental stewardship as competing priorities, ACE delivered a solution that addressed both simultaneously — protecting properties, arable land and infrastructure without compromising the ecology of the waterway.

At the heart of the solution are ACE’s fish-friendly axial flow pumps, designed to handle eels and other migratory species without harm. The pumps discharge directly into the Humber estuary, a designated Special Protection Area, making ecological compliance non-negotiable. To further support fish passage, AQUIKO HDPE flap valves were fitted with ACE’s unique re-set fish passage system — providing flood defence without impeding movement through the structure.

The Result

ACE’s approach at Laxton and Blacktoft reflects its broader philosophy: that the best flood defence schemes do not solve one problem in isolation. By combining pump selection, flow control, fish passage, and material specification into a single coherent package, ACE delivered a solution that will protect the community and the environment for decades to come.
