Swinefleet & Hertford Drain – Tilting Weirs with Solar Control

The Brief

As part of the LAPSIP (Lowland Agricultural Peat Small Infrastructure Pilot) programme, Yorkshire & Humber IDB sought to implement measures that would raise water levels to aid carbon sequestration in drained peatland. A reliable and automated solution was needed to precisely manage water levels within the drains at Swinefleet and Hertford to support environmental targets.

The Solution

ACE supplied two stainless steel tilting weirs (TWs), each integrated with the innovative VLAAR Compact Solar Control (CSC) system. This setup allows for fully automated operation and remote monitoring powered entirely by solar energy — ideal for rural or off-grid locations.

The Hertford site required a larger structure, and ACE delivered a full stainless steel TW measuring 5 metres wide by 1.5 metres high. At Swinefleet, a smaller unit was installed (1.5 metres wide x 1 metre high). Both were installed directly into sheet piles, ensuring structural stability and ease of integration with the existing infrastructure.

The Result

Both systems now allow the IDB to control and maintain optimal water levels with minimal manual input. This improves the potential for peatland rewetting, supporting long-term carbon sequestration and contributing to national environmental goals.
